Pharmacy Practice

Pharmacy Practice

Pharmacy Practice is the branch of pharmacy that deals with the safe, effective and rational use of medicines in patients. It focuses on patient care rather than drug manufacturing or synthesis. It can be said that pharmacy practice is closely related to clinical medicine, pharmacology, therapeutics, and pharmacokinetics and hospital pharmacy. The students are given sufficient knowledge to understand disease conditions, select appropriate drug therapy, monitor treatment outcomes and provide proper patient counseling. Today Pharmacy Practice can be divided into three main fields:

  • Clinical Pharmacy

Clinical pharmacy deals with direct patient care in hospitals and healthcare settings. Clinical pharmacists participate in ward rounds, review prescriptions, monitor drug interactions, adjust doses, and prevent medication errors to improve patient outcomes.

  • Hospital & Community Pharmacy

This field focuses on medication dispensing, inventory management, patient counselling, and ensuring proper storage and distribution of medicines in hospitals and retail pharmacies. It ensures safe and rational drug use at the community level.

  • Pharmacovigilance & Drug Safety

This area involves monitoring, detecting and reporting adverse drug reactions (ADR). It ensures drug safety after marketing and helps regulatory authorities maintain safe use of medicines. Pharmacy Practice plays a vital role in bridging the gap between doctors and patients and ensures optimal therapeutic outcomes through proper medication management.
